EVP Rules of the Road
The Following Rules are not listed in any order, but are all viable as far as a guideline when an EVP session is taking place.
1. Unless you are involved in a direct question and answer session with your EVP’s it is VERY important that you keep quiet. DO not hold your recording device close to your body, as it will pick up the noise from your clothing, also, hold the recorder as far from the floor as you can so that foot traffic is minimized.
2. When recording ALWAYS be sure to notate in your recording (or in your personal notes) when you hear interference noises that you CAN identify for example, dogs, owls, birds, air conditioning units, water, wind, thunder and so on and so forth. While this may seem silly…MANY are the times you will forget these things.
3. Always be sure that you are NOT recording a previously recorded session..this can cause “issues in credibility of the EVP” should you actually catch something.
4. IF you are the assigned “communicator” during an EVP session..make sure your words are clear and concise..DO not whisper or mumble.
5. ALWAYS make note on the recording if someone on your team talks..by stating.. “john or jane asked” or “john or jane stated” this way there is a record of the noise in the background.
6. Always check your area for any interferences BEFORE you start an EVP session (if you are in a residence..dogs and children as well as residents..KNOW where they are so you can ID their noises) also..in outside investigations..vehicles and strangers to the area..try to make yourself as aware as you can as to what surrounds you at all times.
7. IF you are using a cassette recorder..ALWAYS use an external Microphone
8. Never walk with the recorder in your hand unless this is the preset “walk through” investigation..IF you are doing a “walk through” MAKE sure this is noted on the recording.
9. Never ever point your recorder into the wind or a draft
10. Always note the weather if it is storming
11. If you are setting your recorder down for a session..ALWAYS turn it on AFTER you set it down..this negates a lot of noise interference.
12. Always test your recorder before beginning a new EVP session.
13. MAKE sure your batteries are charged, and bring spares.
14. Always make sure your microphone on your recorder is facing the direction where it can receive the best audio (for example..the wall..not so much good audio J)
15. Be respectful of the area you are covering and those you are trying to get a response from.
16. Keep a positive attitude while doing EVP sessions
17. (my personal input) NEVER use the “voice activated” feature (if you have it) it tends to warp the recording somewhat.
18. Do not place your audio patch cord into your microphone entry port when you are transferring EVPS to your computer This will ruin your session when you hit “record” in such programs as “Adobe Audition” Place your audio patch cord in the earphones port on your recorder.
19. Use white noise with caution if you decide to use it, it can cover up voices that are very hard to hear in the background.
20. Always be aware of power line placement near where you are investigating, they can cause a static charge sound on your EVP recordings.
21. Only use computer sound editing programs on your EVP’s when ABSOLUTELY necessary. Your Audio programs should be used for diagnostic reasons NOT editing.
22. When using an audio program, always save your original download (in case you Do adjust it, if it ruins it, the original is always there..also..as evidence the original is always there.)
23. When using the “leave” method with your recorders, always be sure that you remain quiet even after you have exited the direct area..these recorders are highly sensitive and can pick you up several rooms away..footsteps and all.
24. Always make sure your time and date stamps are set on your recorder so you can track each session.
25. Try to be as still as possible during an EVP session…a rustle of a pant leg can sound like WW3.
